TITLE: Ex-voto: 1896
MATERIAL: oil on tin APPROXIMATE SIZE: 7 X 10 inches ESTIMATED AGE: dated 1896 CONDITION: good -- the painting in great shape. When I purchased this ex-voto, the writing was completely legible but I was worried that over the years the writing would continue to fade and be lost. I did what a museum would have done. I found the best artist available and got him to darken the original lettering. I found an excellent artist that paints miniature retablos under magnifying glass. I was fortunate that he was up to the task. He did an excellent job tracing over the exact script. Click here to see what the original script looked like before the conservation was undertaken. PRE-AUCTION PRICE: $1,800 dollars SHIPPING: $ 34 dollars ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: This exvoto must be attributed to Concepción Ábila, the "bee-sting lips" painter. This is especially evident in the beautifully painted faces of the mother and daughter as seen best in the enlargement of their picture in isolation. This painter seems to have always used a writing fluid that fades over the century. I find this true in most of his exvotos that I have seen. The writing on this exvoto is still readable with patience and the right light. In order to keep the record of the text while still legible, I will transcribe in Spanish and then translate int English. In transcribing the Spanish, I will preserve the text as written, the old usophisticated Spanish of rural Mexico with the grammatical errors and colloquilisms of spoken Spanish.
