It happened on 8 December 1857 that a band of thieves, with the intention of killing him so he found out later,  entered in the village of ?????.  Even after robbing and injuring him the bandits did not recognize him.  Being so close to God at that moment, he was persuaded that in the midst of his suffering, God heard his supplications.  Then  he commended so fervently to the Señor Santo Entierro and the Divine Señor de Sacromonte that he was free from all his enemies.  In gratitude for such a singular favor, he dedicates this retablo so that everyone can give thanks to God for his wonders.

El El 10 de Noviembre de 1968, Aconteció que llendo para R. de Arreguin casi toda una familia
fuimos victimas de una emboscada por muchos malhechores from the same ranch. Siendo heridos,

English Translation
On the 10th of November of 1968 it happened that while going to the Rancho de Arreguin nearly all of our family
were victims of an ambush by many bad people from that same ranch.  Being injured
I, Victoria Ramirez with a shot to the foot and another in the arm, and being injured as I was ran as
I could to relate this to Saúz.  In view of so much gunfire in which my daughter fell dead, my husband
received 10 shots but remained alive by a miracle, and Señores Aniceto and Santos Santa Rosa whom also fell
badly wounded and finding ourselves in this conflict, the Señora Isabel Ramirez de Saúz implored from her heart to the
Santa Cruz de la Gavia, praying that the rest not die.  And having performed for us this miracle we declare it in this retablo for its maximum veneration.

TITLE:  Ex-voto:  1896
MATERIAL:  oil on tin
APPROXIMATE SIZE:  7 X 10 inches
ESTIMATED AGE: dated 1896
CONDITION:  good -- the painting in great shape.  When I purchased this ex-voto, the writing was completely legible but I was worried that over the years the writing would continue to fade and be lost.  I did what a museum would have done.  I found the best artist available and got him to darken the original lettering.  I found an excellent artist that paints miniature retablos under magnifying glass.  I was fortunate that he was up to the task.  He did an excellent job tracing over the exact script. Click here to see what the original script looked like before the conservation was undertaken.
PRE-AUCTION PRICE $1,800 dollars
SHIPPING:  $ 34 dollars
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:  This exvoto must be attributed to Concepción Ábila, the "bee-sting lips" painter.  This is especially evident in the beautifully painted faces of the mother and daughter as seen best in the enlargement of their picture in isolation.  This painter seems to have always used a writing fluid that fades over the century.  I find this true in most of his exvotos that I have seen.  The writing on this exvoto is still readable with patience and the right light.  In order to keep the record of the text while still legible, I will transcribe in Spanish and then translate int English.  In transcribing the Spanish, I will preserve the text as written, the old usophisticated Spanish of rural Mexico with the grammatical errors and colloquilisms of spoken Spanish.  In transcribing the Spanish, I will preserve the text as written, the old unsophisticated Spanish of rural Mexico with the grammatical errors and colloquilisms of spoken Spanish.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:   I was glad that our patience in deciphering the text was successful because exvotos with themes such as this one are rare.  In this case the man was being hijacked.  The pretty trees and the spotted dogs are also of interest.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I especially like this unique little ex-voto because of a possibly not recognized object hanging on the wall at the top left.  It is what had been the object of Señorita Rodrigues' search.  It is a wafer iron used to cook the bread of the Holy Communion.  It is a heavy, long-handled piece of iron that looks like a combionation of a blacksmith's tongs and a waffle iron that is placed over the embers to toast the unleavened bread used in the Lord's Supper.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:  This colorful ex-voto depicts a common ocurring tragedy in Mexico.  In preparation for some of the big celebrations, large castillos are built.  These castillos are large frame towers on which the fireworks displays are mounted.  In preparation for such events, the explosive material is stored, sometimes illegally in unsafe conditions.  If the stored material is ignited, it can set off a chain reaction in the neighborhood of also exploding nearby propane tanks that are used in most homes.  The tragedy recounted here both injured people and took lives. From the text there seems to have been eight people involved and the picture confirms with the same number.  The five survivors are giving thanks through this ex-voto.
